I participated in an interview for The Creative Process, a traveling exhibition which is being exhibited at leading universities, selected literary museums and culture centers. As a part of their non-profit international educational initiative, they are publishing essays, stories, poems and creative works broadly related to the author interviews, which will appear in a network of university and national literary magazines.
As my colleagues, students or former students, your published pieces may be linked to my interview and/or the interview of another participating writer.
The Creative Process welcomes submissions from all genres and disciplines. They have a special interest in pieces which may have begun as our class assignments or were written around the time you were my student or colleague. You are also welcome to submit a work of your choice.
The idea is that friends, students, and colleagues will be collectively participating a kind of composite portrait of the interviewed writers, as well as engaging in an ongoing dialogue, the aim of which is to deepen our understanding of teaching and the creative process.

What is The Creative Process?
A traveling exhibition that brings together over 100 leading writers and creative thinkers in iconic portraits and engaging interviews.The Creative Process is being exhibited in top-tier universities and selected establishments around the world. Additionally, these interviews, which explore creativity, critical thinking, and education, will be published online through a network of collaborating university and national literary magazines. As a part of our non-profit international educational initiative, we are also publishing poems, stories, essays, and creative works.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES & FAQ
What kind of works are you looking for?
We welcome all genres and disciplines and consider previously published works. We aim for pieces which are characteristic of a writer’s voice. Favorite pieces or works that have already resonated strongly with your readers which we can share with a wider audience. Feel free to make more than one submission to show range.
When previously published, we will include the usual acknowledgments. We find publishers are happy with their author’s participation in our non-profit educational initiative.
I notice pieces are often linked to a citation by another writer. How is this chosen?
To open the conversation and celebrate the fact that writers are often “in dialog” with each other, The Creative Process chooses a citation by an interviewed writer and includes this alongside your piece. You may also suggest a citation by an author we have not interviewed.
Are there other benefits to being published on the Creative Process?
There is no cost for entry. As a non-profit educational initiative, The Creative Process is not presently in a position to pay contributors, but submissions will automatically be entered into The Creative Process forthcoming writing competitions. Contributors also receive invitations to supporting events at participating universities with the possibility of taking part in readings or other aspects of the project.
Can I send artwork to accompany my submission?
Absolutely. Feel free to send us photos of yourself, related images, book covers, or artworks, which may accompany your piece or be used as a starting point for a new artwork/collaboration with the artist Mia Funk.

Short films and special 4th-year courses combining film and literature. One of our educational initiatives is collaborating with leading film schools, writers, and the non-profit initiative Storyvid on the creation of short films. Participate in making a short film or have your story/poem adapted. Read more >
Piece(s) you submit will be added to a selection of work available for adaptation. If your story is selected, you will be contacted by the participating film school, and there may be opportunities to collaborate further in the filmmaking process. When the film is made, you will be gifted with an original work on paper by Mia Funk inspired by your writing.

How should I submit audio/videos? What are you looking for? Is interpretation open?
Yes, interpretation is open. You might submit audio/video where you are reading your work, discussing your creative process, or other A/V collaborations. Some writers have a background in music or performance, and it can often be interesting to read their writing alongside other expressions of their creativity.
Video submissions should be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo (public access). Please copy and paste the link(s) into your submission form.
Audio – We support .mp3. (If you have audio in another file type and aren’t sure how to convert it, we can make the necessary conversions.)
Most smartphone recordings will automatically be compressed. For best performance, we recommend compressing your files using these specifications:
Bit Depth: 16bit / Bitrate: 128 kbps max (96 kbps for spoken word)
File Size: 160 MB or smaller. For larger files, we will link to an external host.
Please have a read through this when you have time and edit when you have a chance.
–I completely trust your judgment for what students (BA, MFA...) will respond to. Feel free to make shorter and advise and use parts of our new standard submission form or other forms.
–This was written a while ago so should probably be updated with some of our more recent text and image slideshows?
–It is supposed to be an alternative form specifically for students and colleagues of interviewed writers so they will often be submitting class work or essays about their colleagues work...
–We have previously published pieces submitted by students and colleagues of interviewed writers, but it was done more informally by email invite. Having a good form will allow us to broaden and streamline the curriculum integration process and include much more work which celebrates the art of teaching.
–Should we include a separate page with a photo of each participating writer? (It's easy to duplicate the page and just replace the photo.) Or just have one submission page for every interviewed writer? What do you think will make interviewees more likely to share?
–We're now resuming sharing more interviews with the magazines of Columbia, University of Iowa, Princeton, Berkeley, Stanford, University of Pennsylvania, Tin House, LARB...so having a good inviting form for curriculum integration will be essential for celebrating the work of students and teachers.

The Creative Process welcomes submissions from all genres and disciplines. They have a special interest in pieces which may have begun as our class assignments or were written around the time you were my student or colleague. However, you are welcome to submit a work of your choice and, if you wish, you can append a brief piece, e.g., “My Recollections as a Student of Yiyun Li” or include some reminiscences as a friend/colleague as a postscript.

We are presently working on creating writing awards for universities which show the exhibitions, but it's not completely finalised yet, so I wonder if we should add this now? I would gift an artwork based on the winning story, poem... (a previous prize was created in my name like this by Indiana University) and if we can also for a book/cash gifts.
