Girl holds what is not baby anymore. Her keening echoes. She dips her finger in clay dust. Places it against the cave wall where she sleeps. One more mark, rusty-red, to show pain. The love of something not fully realized, just dawning.

During the plein-air class, her breath quickens as she finds just the right blend of ochre and burnt sienna to complete the sunset wash above the sea’s horizon. In that perfect brush stroke, fear and anger fall away. Just paper, salt, fish-scented breeze, time stretching beyond where the world falls away.
The Importance of Arts, Culture, The Creative Process, and how this project resonates with you:
My father was an artist, as was my grandmother. My mother created art in her garden landscapes. I grew up surrounded by creativity in the visual arts, even though I eventually gravitated toward the written word as my creative outlet. I always love when projects combine the two. I know how vital the arts are to both communities and to individuals and play a role in mental health. My hope is that someday our schools will value it once again.
What was the inspiration for your creative work?
This was previously published in Healing Visions: An Anthology of Micro Prose and Fine Art Photography (Matter Press, 2023). The prose accompanied a photo by Meg Boscov. The photo was of a brilliant sunset titled "Ocher". The authors' assignment was to write a micro piece inspired by the photo we were assigned to.
Tell us something about the natural world that you love and don’t wish to lose. What are your thoughts on the kind of world we are leaving for the next generation?
I have always been inspired by the natural world. It surrounded me, protected me, and inspired me when I was growing up on Long Island. I am especially tormented by seeing the clear-cutting happening for development. It's particularly harsh in Florida. Not a tree left standing. Having learned over the years that plants and trees communicate and have some sort of emotional life and may even "feel," I would say I hope my writing draws awareness to the wild. My husband and I work hard to maintain healthy ecosystems on our properties and advocate whenever possible for wildlife and the planet.
