What kind of reader were you as a child?
What was the first book that made a strong impression on you?

I was a very keen reader as a child. I think the Narnia books made a very strong impression, as did Rosemary Sutcliffe’s historical novels. As I got older, writers like C S Forester‘s Hornblower books.

What do you love about being able to work around books every day?The fact that you come across something different every day. There can be few jobs where what you handle is so varied as well as meeting all sorts of interesting people.

A great thing about living in London…
I’ve lived here all my life, and it gives me a real sense of place. So much on our doorstep, such variety of choice.

What makes you happy? What are you grateful for?
Good food and cooking for family and friends make me happy and are my form of relaxation. I’m also grateful for my family and friends, they’re very important to me.

Tell us about some of your favorite books and writers of all time.
Jane Austen has been a constant in my life, but the novels of Graham Greene, Jeanette Winteton, Anthony Burgess, George Simenon, & Eric Ambler.
Fiona Macarthy biographies, H E Bates short stories, and always always Winnie the Pooh. Cookery books (Simon Hopkinson, Nigel Slater, Elizabeth David), the poetry of W B Yeats, Grayson Perry.

As you reflect on your year of reading, what books have you recently enjoyed? And what books are you looking forward to in 2025?
Ali Smith is a particular favourite. I especially liked How to be Both. Really enjoying Claire Keegan at the moment too.
